Starr Pass
JW Marriott's Starr Pass Resort is home to an excellent 27-hole desert-style layout, comprising the Rattler, Roadrunner and Coyote nines. The elevated first tee on the Rattler, the longest of the three nines, gives you a sample of the spectacular views you'll enjoy from the course. It also introduces the layout's undulating character, slender fairways and relatively easy-going first-cut of semi-rough.
The Rattler's 9th hole leads you onto the long par-3 opening hole of the Roadrunner-nine, and also brings you right alongside the huge JW Marriott hotel, the centrepiece of the resort.
With its dramatic elevation changes and the swirling winds created by the Tucson mountains, the Roadrunner-nine arguably lays down Starr Pass's toughest challenge. The Coyote-nine is played as a nine-hole loop that leads out-and-back from the clubhouse.
Throughout, all 27-holes will challenge you from the tee and test your course management, especially in avoiding the "wash" waste areas that guard many greens. A dramatically scenic desert-style course that can challenge and please in equal measure.

Excellent
In the early 1880s the Richard Starr Stagecoach Line travelled through a mountain pass on its way into the old Pueblo of Tucson. Nowadays a few of the golf holes of Starr Pass follow a small section of that stagecoach route.
The JW Marriott Hotel (opened in Jan 2005) is the largest resort hotel in Tucson. Starr Pass was formerly a TPC course, which explains the large amphi-theatre spectator "bowl" at the 18th green. As a TPC course, Starr Pass hosted several PGA Tucson Opens in the late 1980s and early 90s.
