Els Club Dubai
The Els Club in Dubai Sports City opened for play in 2008, representing the first Middle East golf course designed by Ernie Els. The 18-hole championship layout embraces several characteristics taken from Els' favourite courses around the world: large opulent bunkering from the Australian sandbelt, greens resembling those of Pinehurst No.2, and wide rolling links-style fairways.
Set on the undulating slopes of native desert vegetation, the "Big Easy" design combines traditional links design with a genuine aura of desert golf. Featuring broad and gently rolling fairways, steep greenside bunkers and grass swales around the greens, the layout plays to 7,538 yards from the back tees. Over 80 bunkers are potentially in play.
This 18-hole championship golf course quickly established itself as one of Dubai's most prestigious "trophy" courses. Although housing lines the perimeter of the course, and is found on both sides of some holes, it is generally set far enough back for the course to retain its desert feel.
Pick of the holes: Els' design includes an unapologetically tough stretch of three holes named the “Lion’s Den”. This testing trio (par-4 9th, par-4 10th and long par-3 11th) is intended to join other notorious three-hole loops, such as “Amen Corner” (Augusta National), the “Bear Trap” (PGA National, Champion course), the “Snake Pit” (Innisbrook, Copperhead course) and the “Horrible Horseshoe” (Colonial CC).
