Santiburi Samui
Santiburi Samui Golf & Resort: Just because you are on Koh Samui, one of Thailand's most popular holiday destinations, don't think the island's golf course will treat you with kid gloves. This course is as tough, natural, quiet, undulating, tight, breezy and spectacular as golf gets in the entire Kingdom. Not for the faint-hearted and it may have high handicappers struggling at times.
From first to last there are stunning views of the ocean, which is 2-3 kilometres away, back down the hill and across a wide and expansive coconut palm plantation.
Every hole here is also accompanied by significant elevation changes. The front nine contains two fabulous plunging par-3's, while the back nine zig-zags its way up the jungle clad hillside, eventually reaching the most spectacular view of them all, at the tee-box of the signature hole, the superb (and again plunging) par-5 17th.
Although generally tight and testing, the holes here are well laid out, with excellent bunkering as well as palm trees and indigenous jungle giving each hole great style and definition. Two blind drives at the par-4 16th and par-5 17th add to the challenges, but this is not a course for golfers who want an easy-going stroll in the park. Target golf is required on occasions, and if good course management and straight hitting is getting you onto the greens in one piece, then get ready for some roller-coaster putting.
Maintenance standards here at Santiburi Samui are generally excellent. The golfing challenges are as tough as any Thai course serves-up. The views? About as spectacular and breathtaking as you'll see from any golf course in Asia.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
