22 km SE of Bangkok (Sukhumvit hotel area)
From the Sukhumvit area of downtown Bangkok, take the Bangna - Trad highway heading east, direction Bang Na / Chonburi. Make a u-turn (on u-turn bridge) at Lakeside Villa & Tesco Lotus at km 8. Turn left into small road and follow signs to golf.
Muang Kaew Golf: Like its near neighbour, Summit Windmill (located on the other side of the Bangna-Trad highway), this is another well-presented and excellent layout, which will thoroughly test your game in pleasant parkland surroundings.
The good-width fairways are often lined with eucalyptus trees, but its around the greens that the fun really starts. These often elevated putting surfaces are heavily defended by stylish, deep, high-faced bunkers and immaculately maintained grassy run-off areas that will soundly test your chipping and putting from off the green.
Water threatens on just about every front nine hole, with small lakes, ditches and even a canal (klong in Thai) to be reckoned with. There is less water on the also relatively flat back-nine, although the blind drive at the par-5 13th, which requires a shot over the corner of the club's "caged" approach road, is as big a knee-trembler as the drive at the 17th on St Andrews Old Course.
It’s a shame that the new Bangkok Eastern Ring Road (elevated) now slices through part of the back-nine, but it doesn't overly detract from Schmidt's strong design and absorbing layout.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spike facility. Golf carts available for hire. Caddies compulsory.
Good
The "Golfing Oasis in Bangkok" was certainly an apt description of Muang Kaew in days gone by. Unfortunately an elevated section of Bangkok's Eastern Outer Ring Road (route 9) now passes through the course. The course remains a fine and well-presented layout, although some traffic noise now inevitably affect a few holes.
