Barsebäck Golf & Country Club (Ocean course; formerly called the Masters course): A succession of European Tour and Ladies European Tour events, including a Solheim Cup, has certainly underlined Barseback as one of the biggest names in Swedish golf. Home to two 18-hole championship layouts, the Ocean and Pine (formerly Steel) courses, this hotel and golf resort offers an excellent seaside Stay&Play venue. And there's some classic seaside links golf, at least for three holes on the Masters course.
The higher-rated Ocean layout opens with a predominantly tree-lined loop of seven holes. This is your chance to shake off the cobwebs and get acquainted with Barseback's excellent presentation standards. You'll also be tested on the mercurially sloping greens, many of which are bottle-shaped with a narrower front section flanked by bunkers left and right.
It's from the 8th that the course really takes-off. Facing out across the Øresund, the sea that separates Denmark and Sweden, the par-3 8th demands a downhill tee-shot over water to reach the safety of the green. What follows are three stunning links golf holes at 9, 10 and 11. All three hug the Øresund's shoreline, all three are played in a pure-links environment - open and treeless, but without towering sand dunes in attendance.
The par-5 12th brings you back into the mature pine forest for a terrific closing stretch, culminating in one of the most photographed golf holes in Sweden. The par-4 17th is beautifully framed by tall slender pines, with the Øresund and Denmark providing a wonderfully scenic backdrop to the bunker defended green.
Barseback's three seaside holes on the Masters course may leave you wanting more "links-style" golf, but the quality of the woodland holes should more than satisfy your golfing appetite.
