Tecina
Tecina Golf: Just a 40-minute ferry ride from Tenerife brings you to the small volcanic island of La Gomera. Another 30-minutes through the mountains by car and you'll arrive at Tecina Golf, one of the Canary Islands' true hidden gems.
From the clubhouse by the cliffs, you'll be taken back uphill to the course's most elevated point, before starting your immensely scenic 18-hole downward journey. Spectacular views out onto the shimmering Atlantic accompany every hole. Away to the east, the towering peak of Mount Teide on Tenerife, further adds to the abundant panoramas and attractions of Tecina.
Steel's excellent design, ensures the golf course as well as the mountain and ocean scenery is compelling. As you make your descent, the holes are revealed one at a time, rather than all at once. The prevailing direction is inevitably downhill, although many holes cross the slopes laterally.
Between the excellent quality, good-width fairways, a generous band of not overly penal rough is bordered by a wonderful array of trees, shrubs and flowers. The native vegetation in the upper areas becomes more and more exuberant as the course slopes down to the sea. You'll walk alongside a small avocado grove at one point and eventually arrive at the flatter finishing stretch that is played in distinctly tropical surroundings, with bright hues of bougainvillea bordering the course.
Pick of the holes: Among many excellent holes, the plunging short par-3 4th is fabulous, while the green of the par-4 10th appears to sit out in mid-Atlantic.
Visitors welcome weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: 36 (men & women).
Soft spikes only. Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.

The golf course and Hotel Jardin Tecina are both part of the Fred Olsen Group, which also operates the ferries that will transport you to La Gomera from Tenerife. Fred Olsen & Co. carries on a tradition from 1848, when the Norwegian Olsen brothers first entered the shipping business as ships' Captains. The firm is today owned by Mrs Anette S Olsen, fifth generation of the family.
Christopher Columbus made La Gomera his last port of call before his initial Atlantic crossing in 1492. The house in San Sebastián in which he stayed is now a tourist attraction.
