Salobre
Salobre Golf & Resort: one of the newest golf resort destinations on Gran Canaria, the resort was alone in having two 18-hole championship golf courses, before scaling back to 27 holes in 2022/23. The Old course (originally known as the South course) is a solid, well-structured and enjoyable resort-style layout. It now has an additional nine-loop, which came with holes 1-3 and 13-18 from the original New course (aka the North course).
The two nine-hole loops of the Old course gently work their way up and into a valley, where arid rugged slopes and terraces are blended with an enjoyable and relatively easy-going, open parkland layout. Small, squat palm trees and rolling earthmounds separate the good width fairways, with some degree of elevation change present on each hole.
At the centre of the course a small oasis-like water feature incorporates two small ponds joined by a waterfall. One pond must be crossed at the short, downhill par-3 3rd, the other on your drive at the tightly dog-legging par-4 16th. Chattering birds (canaries perhaps?), also enjoy this lush oasis.
On the back-nine the most memorable stretch of holes loop around a small hill, and includes the excellent 14th, arguably the best hole on the course. This signature par-3 is played from tee-boxes that cling to the side of the hill; the good-sized green down below is framed by a rocky backdrop. Beyond the course, housing is very limited, while many views can be enjoyed onto distant volcanic hills and mountains, and down to the Atlantic Ocean.
Arguably the best holes of the New course were shelved when the New course was cut back to just nine holes. They lay furthest from the clubhouse, and were played over rough and spectacular terrain, where fairways precariously clung to hilly slopes and ravines had to be crossed. These holes were not for the feint-hearted, dramatically different from the Old course's easier-going and classical parkland design.

Salobre's logo features a native plant of the Canary Islands, the cactus-like Cardon (Euphorbia Canariensis). Also known to horticulturists as Canary Island Spurge or Hercules Club, this succulent member of the family Euphorbiaceae and genus Euphorbia, grows in the arid and humid environment of the lowest areas in the Canary Islands. It is a small tree, rather than a cactus, and grows up to 3-4 meters high. >> Salobre is the Spanish word meaning brackish or salty.
