La Reserva
La Reserva Club de Golf: This is the newcomer on the Sotogrande estate; in terms of quality and strength of layout its up there with its many well-known stablemates (Royal Sotogrande and Almenara among them).
La Reserva's front-nine is an out-and-back loop taking you through some very natural and relatively open countryside, where house building has not seriously got underway (enjoy this while it lasts!). Water hazards make brief appearances but not threateningly so.
The back-nine loop is also scenic with constantly changing vistas - in the distance the sea and the rock of Gibraltar get into the act, while the foreground is dominated by La Reserva's huge monastery-like, terracotta-coloured clubhouse; a brand new "village" overlooks the closing two holes. Water makes a return appearance at the par-5 15th and the long par-4 17th, this time with bite!
There is plenty of undulation on this layout, as well as excellent bunkering, fast and true greens and generally well maintained and good-width fairways. A great new course to savour; let's hope the infill of real estate is a slow and restricted process.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: men 28; women 32.
Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.
Good
La Reserva is part of the NH World at Sotogrande. From La Reserva's back-nine you can glimpse one or two of the holes on Valderrama, including the famous par-5 4th.
