Location

Latitude:

28.372005

Longitude:

-16.863579

How to get there:

1 hr 45 mins by car from Playa de Las Americas

FROM THE NORTH follow the TF-5 and then TF-42 west, via Puerto de la Cruz-Garachico-Buenavista del Norte-Buenavista Golf. | FROM THE SOUTH follow the TF-1 and then TF-82 north, via Adeje-Guia de Isora-Santiago del Telde-Tanque-Buenavista. In Santiago you can take the TF-436 through the scenic village of Masca to Buenavista, but it is a very winding, narrow, mountainous road. Most locals recommend you stay on the TF-82 after Santiago, then turn left in Tanque, direction Buenavista. You will drop (steeply) down to link to the TF-42 (Buenavista-Garachico road), but its easier going than the Masca road.

Buenavista Golf

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2003

Buenavista Golf: Located directly alongside the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western tip of Tenerife, this fabulous Seve Ballesteros layout is one of the island's most challenging and certainly its most scenic coastal golf course.

With a stunning ocean backdrop on one side and towering, vertical mountain cliffs on the other, Buenavista will thoroughly test your shot-making and overall game, not least if the wind blows. A scattering of palm trees and native cactus, as well as shrubs and bushes of every imaginable variety, does not detract from the rolling, linksy openness of this challenging design.

The six par-3s, six par-4s and six par-5s, provide constant elevation changes, occasional and very threatening water hazards, plenty of excellent bunkering and one or two tightish drives. The early holes take you to the course's higher elevations, but its on the back-nine where the real thrills kick-in. The stretch of holes from the par-4 13th through to the tough, uphill par-3 17th is as good an oceanside clifftop sequence as you'll find.

Always in view, the dramatic mountain ridge tumbles into the sea at the northern end of the course. A peep-hole in the ridge allows vehicles to pass through on their way to Point Teno (Punta de Teno); it also provides a perfect sighter for your tee-shot at the testing par-5 18th, an excellent risk-reward hole for bigger-hitters.

Pick of the holes: the downhill par-3 15th, played to an ocean backdrop with waves crashing against the rocky foreshore, is right up there with the signature par-3s of Pebble Beach and Cypress Point.

Did you know?

On your way to and from Buenavista you may hear mention of the stunning village of Masca. Located amongst the dramatic ravines and peaks of the Teno mountains, Masca was virtually unknown until recently, but has now become a key attraction for those touring the island. The setting of the village is magical and its houses are perch precariously on the narrow ridges of dramatic rock formations.

This is one of the most picturesque parts of the island, but you will need to journey carefully along narrow, winding, mountain roads to get to Masca. Reputed to have been a pirate hideaway, the small Bay of Masca on the coast is a three-hour walk from the village through stunning scenery.
