Woodhill, RSA
Woodhill Country Club: Laid out alongside and through the Woodhill residential estate, this well-presented, Peter Matkovich design is full of excellent and testing golf holes, as well as some wonderful views from its higher elevations.
The anti-clockwise front-nine loop and (mainly) clockwise back-nine loop take you on an expansive journey through the estate, with plenty of undulation and some dramatic holes to be played along the way. Thankfully the many good-sized villas and houses are generally out of range, even from wayward tee-shots.
Any cobwebs in your game should be blown away by the long par-3 2nd and par-5 3rd holes. At the fabulous par-3 7th, one of the best bunkerless par-3s in South Africa, you are rewarded with panoramic views onto the wooded hills of Pretoria's southern suburbs. The plunging, downhill 12th, with water to cross in front of the green is another breathtaking par-3.
The par-3 16th and par-5 17th holes are played alongside a tree-lined stream, giving a pleasant and natural finishing stretch to the course, and a respite from the ever present, though very stylish estate housing. Both the par-4 9th and 18th holes bring the same two small lakes into play, threatening both your tee and approach shots.
With generally excellent maintenance standards on this fast-maturing and rolling estate course, Woodhill is certainly one of the best layouts around Pretoria. Well worth a visit if your staying in South Africa's administrative capital, or nearby Jo'burg.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and Sundays. Saturdays reserved for club members.
Must book in advance. Handicap required
Non-metal spike facility. Golf carts available for hire. Caddies available.
Good
Keep a lookout for the mongooses who inhabit parts of the course, especially near the rocky outcrops at the par-5 5th - not dangerous but certainly inquisitive. You shouldn't find any cows on the course, but at the par-4 14th you will find a dairy. The building remains on the rightside of the fairway include a silo, cowshed and dairy parlour - part of the dairy farm acquired by the Wolfaardt family in 1927.
Woodhill is used as a regular venue for SA Sunshine Tour events, and has hosted the South African PGA Championship (2001).
South Africa's 50th best course (SA's Top 100 Courses, 2023).
