Wild Coast Sun
Wild Coast Sun Country Club: For good reason this stretch of South Africa's eastern seaboard is called the Wild Coast. Hopefully the wind will not be blowing too fiercely when you set out to play this wonderfully scenic and often dramatic layout.
Set in ruggedly undulating terrain, with many stunning Indian Ocean backdrops, Robert Trent Jones Jr. has laid out a challenging and hugely enjoyable golf course, with six excellent par-3s creating the par of 70. Free of any real estate development, the unique natural features of this site have all been retained, and that includes rivers, lagoons, waterfalls, ravines, open moorland terrain and occasional wooded areas.
This memorable collection of beautifully crafted holes includes several "signature" holes. The par-5 12th, with its spectacularly elevated tee is played towards a cascading waterfall, while the par-3 13th requires you to play over the waterfall - a wide ravine separating the tee-box from the green.
Like many a great course the best is saved 'til last. The very challenging par-5 16th is dangerously flanked by water to left and right. The par-3 17th is one of the most scenic par-3s in South Africa, while the closing par-4 requires a longish drive over a small lake and then a testing uphill approach shot to a heavily bunkered green.
Wild Coast is worth every minute of the two-hour drive from Durban, but just hope that when you play the wind is not having a day "on the wild side".
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spike facility. Golf carts compulsory. Caddies and/or ball-spotters available.
