Fancourt (Montagu)
The Montagu at Fancourt: Here at one of South Africa's best known golf and leisure resorts, visiting golfers can enjoy three varied and challenging championship golf courses, as well as excellent practice and learning facilities. Of the three, the Montagu and Outeniqua courses are most closely related. Both are beautifully maintained parkland layouts that effortlessly meander across pleasantly undulating terrain.
The Montagu is the longer and arguably tougher of the two parkland layouts, with many wonderfully designed holes. Its extensive upgrade in 2005, which introduced two entirely new holes (the par-4 1st and par-5 9th), has done much to reinforce its high ranking among the elite of South African courses.
Stylish bunkering, fast undulating greens and the ever-present backdrop of the stunning Outeniqua mountains are all hallmarks of the Montagu. Plenty of trees and flowers, and several attractive water features also add to the undoubted charms of this layout, although don't think this pristinely presented course lacks bite.
Several tightish fairways demand accuracy as well as length from the tee, and those water hazards are dangerously in play on several holes, not least at the challenging par-5 18th. Flanking many of the holes, though never too closely, are the distinctive Cape Dutch style villas, with their whitewashed walls and thatched roofs. As the oldest of the Fancourt courses, the Montagu is still in many ways its standard-bearer, even though the Links course now hosts the biggest professional events.
