Copperleaf, The Els Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2007

The Els Club at Copperleaf: Originally called "Gardner Ross" when it opened in 2007, the Els Club at Copperleaf is a big and stylish golf course that reinforces Ernie Els' well-established design credentials. Like its surroundings, the course is open and linksy, rather than "enclosed" and parkland in character. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it possesses several of the stylish traits that Els wove into his Garden Route design at Oubaai.

Copperleaf's good-width fairways run alongside tracts of long grassy rough, plentiful bunkering and several good-sized water hazards. At some point real estate will become much more established, flanking many holes, but one hopes never too closely as to be in harm's way from wayward drives.

The layout's smooth lines and gentle undulations are easy on the eye. This said, some of this course's big dimensions may be a challenge even for the biggest hitters to overcome ... especially from the tips.

From the back tees the layout measures just a tad over 8,000 yards, with holes like the par-3 12th weighing in at a mere 280 yards and the following par-5 13th getting close to 700 yards. The often large greens may also have you squinting a bit to see the hole, especially if you leave yourself with one or two monster putts. Perhaps Copperleaf can only be tamed by the "Big Easy" himself, although the rest of us can have a lot of fun trying!

Did you know?

What makes this new golf development very special to Ernie Els is that his grandfather, Ernie Vermaak, grew up on this exact 690 hectares of land in and around 1918, on a farm then known as Knoppies Laagte. Oupa Vermaak was also the instigator of the golf-fever that was to take hold of the next two Els generations.
