Sun City (Gary Player)
Sun City Resort (Gary Player Country Club course): Long-time host of the highly lucrative Nedbank Golf Challenge, the superb and always challenging Gary Player Country Club layout nestles down in a natural amphitheatre on the edge of an extinct volcano. The golf course and its setting are both wonderfully natural; there are no roads or houses here to disturb your concentration.
Both nine-hole loops roam out-and-back on their expansive journeys into the surrounding bush and tree-covered hills, before eventually bringing you lakeside at the dauntingly long par-3 16th and water-hugging par-4 17th. Constant elevation changes, substantive bunkering and tough kikuyu grass beyond the beautifully manicured fairways, all contribute to the thorough examination your game will receive. Should you be too wayward, then its probably a case of "reloading", with either thick bushes or occasionally water lying in wait. The quality of the lightning fast putting surfaces matches the excellent presentation standards throughout.
This revered layout includes many fabulous holes, but perhaps most memorable of all are those that close-out both the nine-hole loops. The island-green par-5 9th and long par-4 18th, require well directed tee-shots and then dangerous water crossings before the safety of their respective greens are reached.
An ever-present member of South Africa's Top 10 golf courses, the Gary Player Country Club layout offers a fabulous opportunity to pit your game against one of Gary Player's most enjoyable and toughest tests. And if you are planning a trip to Sun City, ensure you've enough time to tee it up at the contrasting and also hugely enjoyable "Lost City" course.
