Sishen Golf Club: situated on the outskirts of the town of Kathu in the Northern Cape Province, this is truly a unique setting in which to play golf. The course winds its way through a 500-hectare camelthorn forest on the edge of the Kalahari Desert.
Built and maintained by Sishen Iron Ore Mine and opened in 1979, this is the last of the many excellent courses designed by Robert Grimsdell. Considering its surroundings, its lushgreen fairways and greens have surprised many a visitor to this arid, semi-desert region.
Being situated off the beaten track, the course is blissfully uncongested and visitors are always assured of getting a game here. Sishen's par-72, 18-hole course is currently rated in the top 20 best golf courses in South Africa, and is truly one of the country's hidden gems.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.

Sishen Golf Club, located on the outskirts of Kathu, is part of the Kalahari Country Club, formerly known as the Kathu Club. The Club oversees 35 different sports clubs affiliated to it, as well as seven recreational organizations. Kalahari Country Club is wholly owned by the Sishen Iron Ore Mine and provides and maintains top of the range facilities for its various sports sections. The main focal point of the club is the renowned Sishen Golf Course, which was the last to be designed by the late Robert "Bob" Grimsdell.
Khatu, "the town under the trees", was established based on iron ore mining activity in the surrounding Kalahari. Some of the world's largest open-cast iron mines are located here, utilising giant ore trucks that can carry up to 170 tons of ore on each load.
