Rondebosch
Rondebosch Golf Club: Like Mowbray GC, its immediate neighbour to the north, Rondebosch is located less than 10km from Cape Town's famous Waterfront district, and is also flanked by one or two of Cape Town's communication routes.
The northern boundary of the course is delineated by the Black River (a canal), the southern boundary by the busy M5 Highway. Three of the most attractive holes are located the furthest away from the road, tightly wrapped around a sweeping bend in the canal.
Like its neighbour, many of the holes are nicely tree-lined, and water hazards and good bunkering provide additional solid defences on many holes. With its proximity to the centre of Cape Town and wonderful vistas onto Table Mountain and Devil's Peak, Rondebosch is a popular golf course with both local and visiting golfers.
In addition to its mix of natural and distinctly more urban views, it also boasts a variety and abundance of flora and fauna, home to a variety of bird life from cormorants and kingfishers to wild ducks and egrets.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and Sundays; no visitors on Saturdays until after 4pm.
Must book in advance. Handicap required
Walking permitted at all times. Golf carts available for hire. Caddies available.
Rondebosch Golf Club, like its neighbour Mowbray, was established, in part, as a by-product of the Cape Golf Club's move in 1910 to a new location in Ottery.
Many members of the Cape GC (later Royal Cape) were not keen to travel the extra 10km south to the new location. The Mowbray and Rondebosch clubs were soon established, both of them just north of Rondebosch Common, the former home of the Cape GC. Rondebosch occupies lands that previously made-up the Frazerdale Farm.
Rondebosch has hosted South African Sunshine Tour events.
