Randpark Golf Club (Bushwillow course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1941

Randpark Golf Club (Bushwillow course): Since 1971, Randpark Golf Club has been home to two championship golf courses, the longer and tougher Firethorn (formerly the Randpark course), and some would say the more elegant and charming Bushwillow (formerly known as the Windsor Park course).

With some important recent changes to its design (and a new name into the bargain), the Bushwillow layout at Randpark provides an excellent golf outing in a classical parkland setting. This is a course that keeps good company with many other tree-lined, undulating parkland courses found in the leafy suburbs of Johannesburg.

Played on the southside of the clubhouse (the Firethorn heads north), the tree-lined fairways of Bushwillow are not overly tight, although the tree-line could block an approach to the green following any errant tee-shots.

Water doesn't play too much of a role on the opening holes, but comes dangerously into play at the tricky short par-3 8th. Water hazards also make a few telling greenside appearances on the back-nine, especially from the par-3 15th through to the par-5 17th, a stretch of holes known locally as "The Gauntlet."

Beautiful weeping willows and many other tree varieties grace this testing but not overly complicated layout. The qualities of the older Bushwillow course exemplify the charm of parkland golf in bygone days, perfectly complementing the more upfront challenges and bigger "muscles" of its younger sibling.

Running through the Randpark Golf Club, is one of the major streams to flow through northern Johannesburg - the Klein Jukskei. Like the other streams in the north of the city, it joins into the Jukskei River, which then joins the Crocodile River north-west of Johannesburg, which in turn flows into the Hartbeespoort Dam.

Randpark's 18-hole courses have hosted many top-level tournaments, including the South African Open - the world's third oldest open national championship.

For the 2018 playing of the SA Open, the shorter Bushwillow hosted one round of the championship, while the other three rounds, including the final round, were played on the longer Firethorn course (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Randpark).
