Pretoria Country Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1910

Pretoria Country Club: A few years ago you may have been forgiven for thinking Pretoria CC was just the place for an easy-going round of golf; a comfortable outing in pleasant parkland surroundings. However, in recent times a recent Gary Player-designed refurbishment, saw the introduction of a plethora of deep, revetted-style bunkering. This has certainly "upped the ante" on this very good and now more challenging course.

Mature trees and sometimes long, wispy grass lie in wait beyond many fairways, making things look relatively tight from several tees - not least at the doglegging par-4 1st. The top-quality greens are generally fast and subtly sloping.

With water hazards coming dangerously into play on nearly half the holes, this is a layout that can now claim to be one of the area's toughest. Of the 90 or so new bunkers that are spread along the fairways and around the greens, no less than 14 of them are arranged along the short par-5 18th hole. Two tricky pot bunkers at the back of the green (something of a Gary Player hallmark) will catch any shot you hit too long, probably a consequence of trying to avoid the three deep bunkers at the front!

With a flatter front-nine and more scenic and undulating back-nine, as well some more open stretches in amongst the usually tree-lined holes, variety is not in short supply here. Following its 2005 revamp, Pretoria CC, is now even more firmly established as one of the best courses around South Africa's administrative capital.
