Paarl Golf Club, Boschenmeer Golf Estate

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1908

Paarl Golf Club at Boschenmeer Golf Estate nestles down alongside the Berg River, flanked by the spectacular Paarl and Drakenstein mountains. Here you will 27-holes that exude a predominantly tree-lined parkland feel, especially on the River-nine (holes 1-9) and Paarl-nine (holes 10-18). The Boschenmeer-nine (holes 19-27) is a newer addition to the layout, which allows you to climb to slightly higher elevations. Here the terrain is more open and at times the course takes on a linksy character.

The River-nine has the fewest homes lining the way, and brings you directly alongside the Berg River on three occasions. The fairways, some tightish, others more generous, are not too heavily bunkered. However, a more formidable array of sand traps make their presence felt around the undulating greens, not least in front of the par-3 7th. Here a cavernous bunker awaits anything hit too short.

Although the River and Paarl nines provide the more consistent parkland theme, the Boschenmeer-loop should not be overlooked. Together with its greater elevation changes, it arguably has some of the best holes, particularly those where water threatens. The Boschenmeer's strong closing stretch includes the par-4 8th (26th), where an elevated tee allows you a good view of the seriously water-protected green ahead. The closing par-5 9th (27th) is tightly wrapped around a small lake, in the middle of which is a bustling bird sanctuary.

Conditioning may not be as immaculate as at nearby Pearl Valley, but Paarl Golf Club also offers a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging parkland layout. Well worth playing if you are in the Cape winelands.

Did you know?

The current course was originally laid out on the banks of the Berg River in the 1950s. In recent years it has been redesigned and rejuvenated as part of the Boschenmeer Estate development.

To the west of the course you get a good view of the Afrikaans Language monument, a pointed sculpture that sits high on a ridge in the Paarl mountains. Completed in 1975, the monument commemorates the 50th anniversary Afrikaans being declared an official language of South Africa, and separate from Dutch.
