Mount Edgecombe (Lakes)
Mount Edgecombe Country Club (Lakes course): located a short drive into the KwaZulu-Natal hills north of Durban, the Mount Edgecombe Estate can boast two championship golf courses. The Lakes layout (originally known as the No.2 course or Mount Edgecombe 2) is much newer than the original No.1 course (now called the Woods course).
The Lakes, laid out by a local company of landscape architects, weaves its way through a relatively new housing development. Most holes are considerably more open and less tree-lined than those on the arguably more elegant Woods course. But like its sibling, the Lakes also contains several fairway hugging and greenside water hazards, best tackled with that trusted golfing duo ... good course management and accurate hitting.
With much of the course occupying nicely undulating terrain, you will get the opportunity for some pleasant views across neighbouring hills. In the foreground you can inspect the seemingly ever-present housing, some of it opulently large, but thankfully set reasonably well back from the fairways.
Mount Edgecombe's Lakes course provides a challenging and fair test of golf, on a layout that has been variously described as "bolder and more dramatic" than the Woods (No.1). Others say it "it is not without its own natural charms", not least where indigenous trees and bushes line a few holes on the lower sections of the course.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

The properties and golf courses of Mount Edgecombe are located on a former sugar estate, founded by Captain William Smerdon in 1859. The original estate was named after the 7th Earl of Mount Edgecombe (Edward Piers Edgecumbe), whose family coat of arms forms the basis for the Country Club "Boar's Head" logo. A boar's head still hangs above the fireplace in the main hall of the Edgecumbe ancestral home, Cotehele House in Cornwall, England (now a National Trust property open to the public).
In 1924 a nine-hole golf course was constructed here in Natal by a group of golfing enthusiasts, who felt the drive to Durban to play golf consumed too much time. Known at the time as as Huletts Country Club, the course was enlarged to an 18-hole layout in the 1930s, opening for play in 1935. The course was later re-modelled to create today's Woods (No.1) course. The Lakes (No.2) course was added in 1997.
