Mount Edgecombe (Woods)
Mount Edgecombe Country Club (Woods course): located a short drive into the KwaZulu-Natal hills north of Durban, the Mount Edgecombe Estate can boast two championship golf courses. Originally established as the Huletts Country Club, the Woods course was the first 18-hole course here. When a second course opened, the original course became known as the No.1 course or Mount Edgecombe 1.
As the older and typically higher-rated of the two Mount Edgecombe layouts, the Woods course, as its name suggests, plays along pleasant tree-lined fairways. There's less elevation change and less housing flanking the course than on the Lakes (No.2) course, but beware the water hazards, which play a telling part on several holes.
The well-maintained fairways meander through elegant lines of predominantly pine and gum trees, with many shrubs and other tree species also adorning the course. The many water features and often large, multi-tiered greens, will require your approach play to be accurate and your putter to be "hot", if a good score is to be recorded.
Pick of the holes: three rather special holes constitute the layout's "Amen Corner", with water hazards much in play. First up is the snaking par-5 14th, with water guarding the green. The par-3 15th requires a tee-to-green carry over water, while a dam must be carried to reach the fairway at the doglegging par-4 16th.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

The properties and golf courses of Mount Edgecombe are located on a former sugar estate, founded by Captain William Smerdon in 1859. The original estate was named after the 7th Earl of Mount Edgecombe (Edward Piers Edgecumbe), whose family coat of arms forms the basis for the Country Club "Boar's Head" logo. A boar's head still hangs above the fireplace in the main hall of the Edgecumbe ancestral home, Cotehele House in Cornwall, England (now a National Trust property open to the public).
In 1924 a nine-hole golf course was constructed here in Natal by a group of golfing enthusiasts, who felt the drive to Durban to play golf consumed too much time. Known at the time as Huletts Country Club, the course was expanded to an 18-hole layout in the 1930s, opening for play in 1935. The course was later re-modelled to create today's Woods (No.1) course. The Lakes (No.2) course was added in 1997.
