Mossel Bay
Mossel Bay Golf Club: This pleasantly, though never excessively undulating layout may lack the dramatic intensity of nearby Pinnacle Point, but if you are looking for an easier-going outing, then Mossel Bay is an excellent value course to play.
A view of the Indian Ocean from every hole is the club's proud boast, and some of these views along the coast are quite stunning. However, recent years have seen the addition of large amounts of real estate around the course, ensuring the sea views are also accompanied by the sight of many beige and terracotta villas.
Most of the time the demands of each hole are clear to see from the tee, although there are one or two gently dog-legging holes and a blind approach shot to make at the short par-4 18th. Just occasionally, some of the recently added housing may also be in the firing line of anything hit too far offline.
The generally open terrain and gentle elevation changes will encourage big-hitters and lead you towards often small but seriously undulating greens. The greens themselves are defended by an excellent array of bunkering, including deep revetted-style bunkers and grass bunkers.
Perhaps the most abiding memories of Mossel Bay will be from those occasions when you gaze out to sea rather than down the fairway. The best panoramas (and views across the course) come at the par-3 4th and par-4 10th holes. And don't be surprised to find tame Springbok grazing the good-width semi-rough alongside the equally good-width fairways.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. Sat and Weds are competition days (outside visitors welcome to enter).
Must book in advance.
