Mbombela
Mbombela Golf Club (formerly called Nelspruit GC): located on the Matumi Golf Estate, Mbombela creates an excellent first impression. The impressive view from the clubhouse casts the eye across to partly wooded hills on the other side of the wide Crocodile River valley. Farther north lie distant mountain peaks.
The golf course, which gently shelves away from the clubhouse into the valley, may at first glance appear as a relatively easy-going, classical parkland layout. However, the long and very tough opening par-4 (stroke index 1) and downhill par-5 second should correct any thoughts you may have of a record-breaking score.
The early front-nine holes and all of the back-nine present a variety of golfing challenges, including some occasionally tight tee-shots and approaches, wonderful carries over ravines at the par-3s, and plenty of elevation changes. Only the closing section of the front-nine occupies that rather classical, gently sloping parkland you espied from the clubhouse.
Although the lure of Leopard Creek or Hans Merensky (3 hours north) may be your ultimate golfing target in this Kruger Park area, try to create time to play this excellent course at Nelspruit, and learn more of the legend of Jock of the Bushveld (see Did You Know section below).
Pick of the holes: among many excellent golf holes, the par-3 6th is a gem, requiring an accurate carry over a wide ravine, with the river below. The plunging par-5 14th, played from an elevated tee, is another dramatic and potential card-wrecking hole.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

Jock of the Bushveld, South Africa's best known (canine) literary figure, provides Mbombela GC with its emblem. Jock, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, accompanied Sir Percy Fitzpatrick on his travels through the Transvaal in the 1880s. Their adventures were later described by Sir Percy in his best-selling book, Jock of the Bushveld, which was published in 1907. In May every year, Mbombela hosts the "Jock of the Bushveld" amateur tournament, a week long event that attracts golfers from around the globe.
Many varieties of trees are liberally dotted around this parkland course, including marula trees, from which the liqueur Amarula comes. Mahogany and fig trees also feature strongly, as well as the aptly named sausage tree.
South Africa's 63rd best course (SA's Top 100 Courses, 2023).
