Hermanus Golf Club: Although often overshadowed by nearby Arabella on the visiting golfers' roster, Hermanus underwent significant changes in 2007, which greatly improved its standing and degree of challenge. The addition of a third nine-hole loop, combined with new fairways, greens, earth-mounding and tee boxes, gave this busy and popular course a signficant lift.
Now with three out-and-back nine-hole loops, the layout takes you close to mountains, through several tree-lined stretches and almost down to the sea's edge (although two rows of houses prevent you getting right alongside the beach).
Variety seems to be a recurring theme throughout. Mixed in with the usually good-width and nicely undulating fairways, there are some tightish drives to make, not least at the pine tree-lined, short par-5 11th. The greens can vary from small and subtly sloping, to large and multi-tiered.
On several occasions the feel here is that of a classic parkland course, at other times things get a bit more open. The contrasting mountain and sea views are occasionally complemented by some real estate, although this is confined to a few sections of the course perimeter.

Mention Hermanus to most South Africans and they will tell you it's the whale-watching capital of the Cape. This charming fishing (and whale-watching) village is popular with Capetonians as a weekend getaway. During the Christmas and Easter holidays the resident population of 8,000 often swells to over 40,000. Due to this influx, the Hermanus Golf Club has always been a busy and popular golf venue at these times of the year.
