Tanah Merah (Garden)
Tanah Merah Country Club (Garden course): Here at Tanah Merah, you will find two of Singapore's finest championship golf layouts, the Garden course and the also challenging and equally enjoyable Tampines course. Before losing some of its footprint to an expansion of Changi airport in 2015, the Garden course was generally credited as being Tanah Merah's tougher, bigger dimension, tournament layout. Those honours are now claimed by the Tampines layout.
The Garden course (formerly the exclusive preserve of the club's members and their guests) weaves its way backward and forward over pleasantly undulating terrain. The feel is more compact than on the Tampines course, with good earthmounding and a smattering of trees lining the fairways. Water is in play on about half the holes, with several greens dangerously jutting out into small lakes. There are some very risky approach shots for the flag-chasers amongst you.
The island green par-3 14th is one of the water-guarded gems. A few waterfall features, most notably at the short par-5 18th, complement the good-quality earthmounding and excellent (often deep and straight-faced) bunkering. As with its companion course, maintenance and presentation are generally first class, with flowers and shrubs adding garden-like touches in many places.
Like its near neighbour, Laguna National G&CC, Tanah Merah is located in relatively close proximity to Singapore's Changi Airport. Some noise intrusions are perhaps inevitable, but should not detract from the enjoyment of playing on Tanah Merah's excellent courses.
Limited access: this private course is generally playable only by members and their invited guests.
Private club; guests may generally only play if invited by a member. Overseas visitors should contact the club to ascertain playing possibilities and associated fees.
