Laguna Natl (Masters)
Laguna National Golf & Country Club (Masters course): Recent developments have produced a seismic transformation at Laguna National. For the travelling golfer, it is no longer a revered but "off-limits" private country club. It can now challenge Singapore's mighty Sentosa ... at least in terms of facilities and accessibility. A large "futuristic" luxury hotel and a David Leadbetter Academy have recently joined Laguna National's two championship layouts ... the "tournament" Masters course and the heavily made-over World Classic course.
Originally flat terrain, that was all changed by cousins Andy and Perry Dye in the early 1990s. Plenty of earthmounding was sculpted, several small lakes installed and a wide variety of bunkering (some of it railway sleepered) introduced. Expansive sandy waste areas joined the plentiful array of hazards. (On the Classic course Andy Dye returned to take all of this to another level).
Since its unveiling, the excellently maintained Masters layout has won ample admirers and hosted many prestigious world-class events. For amateur and professional alike, hitting its generally good-width fairways or forgiving semi-rough should not be too troublesome. But avoiding the water hazards, which feature on about half the holes, is another matter. Three of the four par-3s involve water, not least at the near-island green 17th, which protrudes peninsula-like into one of the lakes.
Both the front and back-nines finish with elegant par-4s that run alongside a small lake (as is also the case on the Classic course). The long par-4 18th dangerously dog-legs left-to-right towards another peninsula green that juts out into a lake. A tough closing shot no matter how good your drive was.
Proximity to roads and the airport may create some background noise at times, but certainly nothing to detract from enjoying this excellent and most attractive parkland layout.
