From Edinburgh, travel east on the A1, direction Berwick-upon-Tweed. Turn off the A1 at the Bankton Junction, and follow the A198 direction North Berwick. After 9 miles (passing through Longniddry and Aberlady) the Gullane GC Professional Shop (and No.1 Course check-in) is on your left; on your right is the Visitor's Clubhouse (No.2 and No.3 courses check-in).
Gullane (No.2)
Gullane Golf Club (No.2 Course): variety, sweeping elevation changes and sublime linksy openness are the hallmarks of Gullane's No.2 course. A bit shorter than the No.1 layout, this is also a hugely enjoyable out-and-back links golf course, which offers ever-changing scenery and many stunning views as you journey round.
The short par-4 1st and 18th holes are laid out on the south side of the A198, alongside which you'll find Gullane Golf Club's modern visitors' clubhouse (where green fees are paid). The first third of the course shares part of Gullane Hill with the No.1 course, before No.2 moves down towards Aberlady Bay and the Firth of Forth.
This is a classic links layout, where your game strategy will be influenced by the prevailing wind and weather. At times the fairways will not feel overly wide, although they are flanked by generally good-widths of first and second-cut rough. Among a fine array of links golf holes, each of the three par-3s on Gullane No.2 are stylishly defended by a clutch of sharp-edged pot bunkers, always easier to get into than out of.
It's oft been asked, which is the better course at Gullane, No.1 or No.2. Both enjoy stunning views and coastal scenery; both are superb examples of seaside links golf. Although the former climbs to the top of Gullane Hill, with perhaps more thrills and spills along the way, many locals will tell you that No.2 is their favourite of the three Gullane courses.
Pick of the holes: the downhill bunker-ringed par-3 11th is one of the No.2's highlights. It enjoys a stunning sea-view backdrop, with a large area of dunes and Aberlady Bay marshland spread out beyond the hole. The back-tee of the doglegging par-4 14th also offers another sumptuous vista, as does the plunging downhill par-4 17th.

Good
Pronounced Gull'n, rather than "Gull'ain" or "Goo'lane", the Gullane Golf Club dates from 1882. The No.2 course, which came into being in 1898, hosted the 2002 Seniors Open Amateur Championship.
The distinctive pudding-bowl hill that lies inland, six miles to the east of Gullane, is known as North Berwick Law. This "volcanic plug" sits a mile or so south of the town of North Berwick, and was once home to an Iron Age hill fort. A public footpath allows walkers to climb to the top of the hill, where a whale's jawbone resides ... and the views are jaw-dropping!
No.2 course:
Scotland's 42nd best course (Golf World, 2023).
Britain & Ireland's 134th best course (Golf World, 2024).
