Victoria Course, Vilamoura

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2004

Victoria Golf Course (formerly part of the Oceânico Group) is one of five courses in Vilamoura now operated by Dom Pedro Golf. The others are: The Old Course, Millennium, Pinhal and Laguna. When Victoria opened in 2004, Arnold Palmer's first design in Portugal added a stylish big dimension layout to Vilamoura's already impressive collection of courses.

The Victoria course ("Victory" in English) is an expansive modern layout, maintained in superb condition and grand enough to have staged the WGC World Cup of Golf in its early years. The terrain here is predominantly open, with wonderful rolling fairways and plenty of water hazards, especially on the back-nine.

With the exception of the par-4 7th, the threat from water is much less on the front-nine, which circles around a mixed area of housing and farmland. On the back-nine, the par-5 12th and par-4 14th holes require careful shot selection to avoid recurring water dangers, while the par-5 17th and long par-4 18th both have water hazards running the full length of each hole.

With many elevated greens, which are both fast and true, you'll need accurate approach work to hit and stay on the excellent putting surfaces. Set a mile back from the coast, there are no sea views as such, although the Algarve scenery provides some pleasant backdrops to several of the holes. From the course you may well see white storks flying in and out of their nearby nesting sites.

Did you know?

Now operated by Dom Pedro Golf, five Vilamoura golf courses (The Old Course, Victoria, Laguna, Millennium and Pinhal) were formerly part of the Oceânico Group, a property developer and golf and resort operator in the Algarve. Approximately 30 km northwest of Vilamoura, at their Amendoeira Golf Resort near Alcantarilha, Oceânico still operate the Faldo and O'Connor Jnr courses.

In 2005, in only its second year, the Victoria course played host to the WGC-World Cup of Golf. It is now an established tournament course used by the main professional tours. For more details view Top Golf Tournaments at Oceanico Victoria Golf Club.
