The Old Course Golf Club (formerly part of the Oceânico Group) is one of five courses in Vilamoura now operated by Dom Pedro Golf. The others are: Victoria, Millennium, Pinhal and Laguna. The Old Course, as the grande dame of Vilamoura's courses, will most assuredly test your all-round shot-making to the full.
Don't be fooled by the relatively easy-going opening downhill par-4. Length is not the issue on this immaculately maintained and elegant "old" course. Accurate placement of tee-shots is paramount. Anything slightly wayward will result in your path to the green being blocked by the No.1 hazard here ... neatly spaced umbrella pine trees that line the not overly wide fairways. Each tree has been strategically placed to create maximum interference with your score - or so it seems!
The Old course meanders back and forth, uphill and down, in two nine-hole loops. Character and charm abound, not least at two very special par-3s: the 4th which requires a high-flighted shot up-and-over a large umbrella pine, and the very impressive long downhill 6th.
There are many scenic views onto surrounding hills, a welcome distraction as you size-up the fast and mischievously sloping greens. This maybe the oldest of the Vilamoura courses, but it's still the best looking, arguably the toughest test and always a pleasure to play.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

Now operated by Dom Pedro Golf, five Vilamoura golf courses (The Old Course, Victoria, Laguna, Millennium and Pinhal) were formerly part of the Oceânico Group, a property developer and golf and resort operator in the Algarve. Approximately 30 km northwest of Vilamoura, at their Amendoeira Golf Resort near Alcantarilha, Oceânico still operate the Faldo and O'Connor Jnr courses.
The Old Course at Vilamoura played host to the Portuguese Open in 1979 (winner: Brian Barnes).
