Terras da Comporta (Dunas course): this long-awaited celebutante of Portuguese golf eventually came to fruition after some stops and starts along the way; it opened for play in the spring of 2023. The wonderfully expansive Dunas (Dunes) course is set to become one of the highest ranked layouts in continental Europe. Based on an ethos of quality, sustainability and eco-friendliness, this top-end golf layout represents the starting piece of what will become a substantial resort development.
Located a kilometre from the Atlantic Ocean, and laid out in two nine-hole loops, David McLay-Kidd's sand-based "Dunas" design is spread over an undulating 250-acre parcel of coastal duneland. Kidd apparently approached the design of this 7,600-yard course as if it were a potential Ryder Cup venue, while bearing in mind that the vast majority of players here will be amateur club golfers.
Forgiving from the tee, and more demanding as the green approaches are key features to the wonderfully natural layout. There's a distinct absence of water hazards, but that's more than compensated for by the grandeur of the bunkering and sandy waste areas. You frequently look out onto excellently crafted holes from elevated tees.
The fairways pitch and roll more extravagantly than the opulently-sized greens. At the par-3 3rd, once you've cleared a large waste area, you'll find a 60-yard green awaits. A linksy flow is maintained throughout, not least with the teeing grounds blending into the tart of the fairways.
Pick of the holes: amongst a wealth of riches, the standout holes include the par-3 3rd, downhill par-4 4th, dramatic straightaway par-4 11th and 13th, drivable par-4 16th, and handsomely framed par-3 17th.

The masterplan for Terras da Comporta envisages a substantial and upmarket golf resort development, based on an ethos of quality, sustainability and eco-friendliness. In addition to the existing Dunas course, a second 18-hole championship course designed by major champions José María Olazábal and Sergio Garcia will also feature.
Over time, the luxury upmarket resort will include hotels and tourist condominiums, a commercial and cultural component, various sports and wellness facilitie, an exclusive Racquet Club with 10 tennis courts, including a natural grass court and 9 paddle courts, and other sports activities. There will also be facilities for the younger members of the family to enjoy themselves.
