Salgados
Salgados Golf Course: Occupying flat terrain with a lagoon on one side and plentiful resort accommodations on the other, the Salgados course is set within a protected natural wildlife reserve. It's fair to say the layout has the open feel and "seaweed smells from Atlantic waves" found on classic British and Irish links courses. But the linksy theme at Salgados ends there.
Rather than hilly sand dunes lining the holes, here at Salgados you'll find neat rows of palm trees defining the flattish fairways, and water, water everywhere. The nearby lagoon ensures there are small lakes, canals and ponds to be negotiated on just about every hole. Sometimes water lurks to your right and to your left, and may need to be crossed before you reach the safety of the greens. The good-size putting surfaces are also usually defended by a bunker or two.
Compensating for all the water that's in play, the course is not overly long at 6650 yards from the tips, and playing out of the fairway bordering semi-rough is not too onerous. Depending on what the elements have in store, "staying dry" on this Robert Muir Graves restyled course always demands straight hitting and good course management. If the wind is blowing across the expansive open terrain, keeping your ball on terra firma becomes a whole lot more challenging!
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum permitted handicap: men 28; women 36.
Soft spikes only. Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.
