Quinta do Lago Golf (South course): regarded as the golfing crown jewel of the Quinta do Lago estate, the South course is frequently ranked as one of the best courses on the Algarve and in Portugal.
This big dimension layout, a former European Tour course, encourages big-hitters with its generally good-width fairways. The gently undulating terrain, perhaps a bit more pronounced on the back-nine, includes several elevated greens that will require a club or two more on approach shots. Between the back-nine par-5s at 14 and 17, there's a picturesque loop of holes bringing you down to the water's edge of a good-sized lake, an inlet from the Ria Formosa lagoon.
Accurate tee shots are essential in order to reach many of the greens in regulation and the course is made more challenging by a good variety of doglegs and strategically located hazards. The front-nine holes, which wind their way through parkland and luxury villas, favour a draw, while the back-nine may respond better to a fade from the tee.
The course is maintained in excellent condition from the opening downhill par-4 to an equally challenging par-4 finish. An Algarve "must play" course.
