Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort (Atlantic course): Up in the Sintra hills, in the grounds of a former monastery, lies one of continental Europe’s finest golf courses. Penha Longa's hilly, dramatic and fabulously challenging Atlantic course, burst onto the Portuguese golfing scene in the early 1990s. It has been a must play course ever since.
Parts of the Penha Longa layout will feel quite open (and exposed to prevailing winds), while other stretches are more sheltered and tree-lined. The size and speed of Penha Longa's greens are matched by the depth and quantity of the bunkering around them.
Alongside the course are some constructions dating back centuries, not least the remains of a former Roman aqueduct that memorably straddles two of the front-nine holes. Thankfully newer course-side constructions (in the form of houses and villas) are still quite limited.
This wonderfully varied and challenging out-and-back layout contains several dramatic elevation changes that will thoroughly test your club selection and course management. On the front-nine, the higher elevations offer panoramic vistas onto the distant Atlantic Ocean. The bends and chicanes of the Sintra autodrome come into view beyond the course on the back nine.
From the short par-4 1st right through to the testing par-5 18th, every hole is memorable and wonderfully designed. In combination, they ensure Penha Longa's place amongst Portugal's most highly rated and best known golf courses.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: 24. Proof of handicap required.
