Oitavos Dunes Golf Links: Originally starting out as Oitavos, now Oitavos Dunes, this relatively recent layout in the Algarve is now rated amongst the best courses in continental Europe. It is also the continent's most westerly golf course, one that provides a top-quality and challenging mix of woodland and links golf holes.
After a tree-lined and testing opening four holes, the next 12 are played in a more open undulating and linksy environment. From the middle section of this out-and-back layout you are afforded wonderful views onto the Atlantic Ocean. If the wind is blowing, this is where your golfing skills will be tested the most.
Three par-3s in four holes on the back-nine is unusual, but among them is the 14th - the signature hole and a truly world-class par-3. In keeping with the best links courses, the greens here are firm and fast, with slopes and borrows designed to outwit the best of putters. The course itself, built on sandy soil, can absorb any amount of water and still remains playable.
Although the green fee is among the more expensive in this area, its well worth digging a little deeper in your pocket and not missing out on the excellent links layout of Oitavos Dunes.
