The most iconic golf tournaments and courses in the US
There are almost 39,000 golf courses in the world, and nearly 17,000 of them are situated in the U.S.
Each one brings something unique to the table, but certain courses are reserved for the biggest major golf tournaments featuring the best golfers on the planet. Before you begin exploring sportsbooks, make sure you know about the top golf courses in the US and the tournaments held at them.
The Masters is the first major golf tournament that’ll come to mind for most people, regardless of whether they’re casual golf fans or those who tune in every weekend for both the best golf tournaments and the smaller tournaments that don’t attract as much fanfare.
The Masters serve as the first major golf tournament each year, with its final round typically played on the second Sunday of April. It takes place at Augusta National Golf Club, which is one of the best golf courses in the US, and the winner walks away with the tournament’s iconic green jacket.
The U.S. Open is another one of the major golf tournaments that should definitely be on your radar if you’re an avid golf fan or even just someone who enjoys watching the spot occasionally. Although the location of this tournament changes annually, it’s routinely held at gorgeous golf courses like Pebble Beach Golf Links, which has hosted the U.S. Open five times so far.
It also makes stops at other iconic golf courses in the US, such as Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York and Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. The U.S. Open tends to show up on TV screens around the middle of June with its final round always falling on Father’s Day.
The Players Championship, meanwhile, might not be an actual major tournament, but it is often referred to as the “fifth major” because of all the hype that surrounds it every March. It features one of the largest purses, which is why it’s never any surprise to see the top 50 golfers in the world agreeing to play in it. It has also turned into such a big deal because it’s played at TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course every year, home to the now-legendary 17th hole that is affectionately known as “Island Green.” This course regularly lands on lists of the top golf courses in the US based on this hole alone.
If you’re only able to catch a few major golf tournaments each year, make it these three. But don’t sleep on some of the other top golf tournaments happening throughout the country, too. From the fabled Arnold Palmer Invitational played at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Florida in March to the PGA Championship held in May on courses like Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Ocean Course in South Carolina, there are so many amazing golf tournaments and golf courses you should make the time to see.
