Next month the PGA Tour will hold the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, Michigan from June 29 through July 2. It will be the fifth year that the classic has been held with Nate Lashley, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Davis, and Tony Finau winning the first four iterations of the classic. The purse for the event is currently set at $8.8 million.
Detroit Golf Club is over 100 years old, originally founded in 1899, and started as a 6-hole course. Over time, that number grew to nine holes, 18, holes, and eventually up to 36 holes - broken down into two full golf courses, the North and South Courses. The South Course holds a par of 68 while the North Course in which the Rocket Mortage Classic will be played holds a par of 72.
One of the favorites to watch out for will be defending winner Tony Finau who is red hot over the last 12 months, winning the 3M Open, Rocket Mortgage Classic, Cadence Bank Houston Open, and the Mexico Open this past April. Finau picked up his first PGA Tour win during the Puerto Rico Open in 2016 and wouldn’t win again until 2021 with the Northern Trust. However, since that second career victory, Finau has turned into one of the world’s top golfers. The WGR rankings rank Finau 12th overall in the world entering June.
Other favorites will include Scott Scheffler, Jon Rham, Rory McIlroy, and Patrick Cantlay. Cantlay is especially intriguing to watch as he finished tied for second last year alongside Taylor Pendrith and Cameron Young.
Unlike the major tournaments, only PGA golfers will be eligible to compete in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, eliminating talents such as Brooks Koepka. Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Cameron Smith, Phil Mickelson, and others. The U.S. Open is the next major championship, set to be hosted next month in Los Angeles, California. Last week, Brooke Koepka won his third PGA Championship and fifth overall. He also won in 2018, and 2019, and holds five major championships overall.
One additional golfer to watch out for at the Rocket Mortage Classic will be 35-year-old Kalamazoo, Michigan native Erik Barnes. Barnes has been golfing professionally since 2011 spending time on the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, PGA Tour Canada, PGA Tour Latinoamerica, and NGA Pro Golf FTour. In his career, he has just two wins, his last coming in 2020 at the Jamaica Open. Born in Kalamazoo, Erik Barnes has two pro tour wins behind him. If you want to play on a third potential winner, compare the probabilities on Michigan's sportsbooks.
Through the Rocket Mortage Classic's brief history, the best-to-par score was -26 set by Tony Finau last season. Three of the four winners have been -23 or better to par and have won by multiple strokes. 2021 champion Cameron Davis, is the only golfer to not win with a to-par score of -20 or better while winning his title in a playoff over Tony Merritt and Joaquin Niemann.
While the Rocket Mortage Classic is quickly approaching, the PGA Tour will also have to go through The Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto, Ontario, the U.S. Open in Los Angeles, California, and the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut all in the lead up to the Rocket Mortgage Classic that is scheduled for late July. It continues to be an extremely busy season of golf and as we head into the summer, it’s important to remember to check out Michigans' sportbooks going forward.
