Waitikiri
Waitikiri Golf Club: here you will find one of the most interesting of the parkland golf layouts in Christchurch - a golf course full of character, full of challenge and full of trees. Towering poplars, as well as mature birch, pine, eucalyptus and many other species line the fairways, sometimes tightly, other times less so.
Some stretches of Waitikiri are characterised by gently undulating terrain, where many fine dog-legging holes lead you to small and excellent greens. Perhaps a tad compact at times, some fairways are separated by a single row of trees.
At other times you'll get the impression of a more expansive parkland layout, especially with the adjoining 18-hole Bottle Lake Golf Club stretching to the north. On each course you can you can easily lose yourself within the area's quiet tree-lined environment. More distant views of the hills south of Christchurch are also in view from this well-rated course.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spikes preferred. Walking permitted at all times. Golf carts available for hire.
Good
Waitikiri GC has hosted several top quality tournaments including the NZ Amateur Championship and the Pacific Rim Championship.
The course at Waitikiri was designed and built in the late 1930s by Albert Raymond "Ray" Blank (MBE) (school headmaster, sportsman, county councillor, and golf course designer), who considered doglegging holes to be the golfer's best friend or worst enemy. There are no fewer than thirteen doglegging holes in the Waitikiri layout.
Adjoining Waitikiri to the north is Bottle Lake Golf Club, also designed by Ray Blank. Since opening in 1939 as part of the "Waitikiri Links", Bottle Lake has also been known as Burwood GC (c. 1940), Windsor GC (1956), and eventually Bottle Lake GC (2013).
