Koninklijke (Royal) Haagsche G&CC

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1893

Koninklijke (Royal) Haagsche Golf & Country Club: "The Haagsche" as it is best known, is the most southerly of three world-class links courses on the Dutch coast. Together with Kennemer and Noordwijk, the Haagsche is located in a stunning stretch of duneland that runs from The Hague up to IJmuiden (near Amsterdam). All three courses are tucked into the sand hills that sit behind the North Sea shoreline.

On your first visit (and probably thereafter), you'll enjoy the stroll from Haagsche's sumptuous clubhouse, through the whispering pine trees and up to the elevated starter's hut. From here you look down onto the opening par-5 hole and across the rolling open terrain that typifies much of this course.

The narrow undulating holes are home to a multitude of mounds, dips and hollows. On the entire course you'll find only one fairway bunker (it's a different story around the greens) and no water hazards. Lining the fairways is an intimidating array of mounds, wispy fescues, bushes and trees, all contributing to the beauty of the course and its undoubted challenges.

This absorbing and testing layout contains a knee-trembling "Amen Corner." Prayers are indeed in order as you approach the pencil thin par-4 14th, the semi-hidden green of the par-4 15th, and the long-carry at the par-4 16th. After these three potential card-wreckers you'll be glad to stand on the wonderfully elevated 18th tee and look down this unforgettable par-5 hole, the imposing clubhouse majestically framing the final green.
