Goyer Golf & Country Club: Flanked by the Utrecht-North Holland provincial border to the west, and the A27 motorway to the east, the layout here at Goyer is imbued with a modern championship theme throughout. The clubhouse, golf course, large undulating greens and even the course signage all have a distinctly American flavour - although it should be said the course was designed by Belgian architect Bruno Steensels (whose work has gained many followers in recent years).
Although quite compact, the course benefits from good landscaping and routing, as well as several ponds, and copious bunkering ... some of it in the form of expansive sandy waste areas. This all ensures the holes are spaced reasonably well apart and some pleasant undulations are created by the mounding.
The USGA standard greens, either long and thin or wide and shallow, are some of the best around and a real joy to putt on ... as long as your line reading is up to snuff.
Earlier tree-planting has now grown-in, although the natural openness of this modern layout has generally been preserved. Not a course designed to attract top-level "pro-golf" tournaments, but one that is certainly long enough, tight enough and challenging enough to give most amateur golfers a thorough work-out.
Visitors welcome on Mon-Thur; no outside visitors on Fri-Sun.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: 24. Proof of handicap required.
Soft spikes only. Players generally walk this course.
Excellent
Goyer is laid out just to the east of the northern end of the "Utrechtse Heuvelrug". This ridge of low sandhills runs between the cities of Utrecht and Amersfoort, and extends in several kilometres to the north-west and south-east. On this sandy "backbone" can be found several of the Netherland's top inland courses, among them Hilversumsche in the north, Lage Vuursche, the mighty Utrechtse "De Pan" and Hoge Kleij.
