Amsterdamse
Amsterdamse Golf Club: Comprising a front-nine clockwise outer-loop, and an anticlockwise back-nine inner loop, the relatively compact Amsterdamse layout lays down an enjoyable test for golfers of all abilities.
With out-of-bounds on the leftside of most of the front-nine holes, this outward half is certainly not a place where "happy hookers" of the golf ball will prosper. On the stronger inward-nine, staying out of the many water hazards takes over as your key challenge.
Throughout, the landscape and fairways here are generally quite flat, and most holes are either flanked by small trees or water. On occasions both water and trees combine to create a challenging tightness from the tee, even more testing when the wind blows (as it often does here).
There are many very good holes, particularly some of the longer par-4s. An exemplar is the good-length 17th, with water to cross in front of the green. Like neighbouring Houtrak Golfclub (which you can see from the par-4 4th hole) the flightpath into Schipol Airport is not far away and the noise of passing jets may be a distraction, but not a serious one.
Visitors welcome on weekdays; generally members only on weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: 28. Proof of handicap required.
Players generally walk this course.
Excellent
Originally located closer to Amsterdam city in Duivendrecht, the club was forced to look for a new home after its original lease expired and a railway line expansion took priority over golf.
The current location was identified in the late-1980s and the new course, designed by Baron Paul Rolin, was ready for play in 1991. Additional work was carried out to the course in 1992 and 1996 under architect Gerard Jol. In 2006 further improvements were made, introducing some undulations into a few of the holes.
The original Amsterdam layout (now called GC Amsterdam Old Course) is still located near Duivendrecht, in the southeast of the city. Here you will find 9-holes open for play, originally part of an 18-hole championship course, which was laid out by the famous firm of Colt, Alison & Morrison. The Old Course was opened in 1935, but lost nine of its holes to road and railway development in the mid-1980s.
