The Great Rift Valley in eastern Africa is a geographic trench that was originally thought to run 6,000 kilometres from Lebanon's Beqaa Valley in the north, down to Mozambique in the south.
In fact the Great Rift Valley is now known to comprise separate rift and fault systems; the Great Rift name is most often used to refer to what is actually the smaller East African Rift.
