Ugolino Firenze
Golf dell' Ugolino - Firenze: The Florence Golf Club Ugolino, known locally as Golf dell'Ugolino, carries the unique distinction of being the oldest golf club in Italy. It also has the honour of featuring in Chris Santella's best-selling book, "Fifty Places to Play Golf Before You Die."
Established in 1933, the course occupies the constantly undulating and immensely scenic terrain of the Chianti hills, just south of the breathtaking city of Firenze.
In this quiet and classical Tuscan landscape, the holes curve and slant their way between cypress, pine and olive trees, arriving at small, well-defended greens. Accuracy rather than power will serve you well around this not overly long course, where several steep slopes need to be contended with, especially on the front nine.
At times the back-nine assumes a slightly less rolling character, not least on the more open 14th, 15th and 16th holes. This threesome sits on the highest part of the course, rewarding you with the best of the panoramas onto the surrounding Tuscan countryside: a wondrous panoply of fruit orchards, vineyards and softly wooded hills. The par-5 17th, which sweeps elegantly from left to right as it gently climbs uphill, is one of many memorable holes.
Perhaps a little rustic in parts, this course may be representative of an earlier golfing era, but it still lays down an excellent challenge to golfers of all levels.
If you choose to walk (as most locals do), there's no better place to replenish those depleted energy levels than in the award-winning clubhouse - an excellent source of local fare, that can be washed down with a bottle or two of local Chianti.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: 36.
Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.

It was in 1889 that Firenze's English sporting fraternity founded the first Golf Club in Italy. Orignally based in the Cascine area, the Florence Golf Club transferred to Osmannoro after the Great War, then moved again to Ugolino in 1933 to a brand new 18-hole course designed by English architects Blandford and Gannon.
Ugolino hosted the European Tour's Florence Open from 1990 to 1992, and most memorably the 1983 Italian Open, in which Bernhard Langer triumphed in a thrilling playoff with Seve Ballesteros and Ken Brown (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Ugolino).
The city of Florence (in Italian, Firenze; in Latin, Florentia) is the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany. Lying on the Arno River, Firenze is considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and was one of Europe's most important trading and financial centres during the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family; from 1865 to 1870 served as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and is now visited by millions of tourists every year.
