Golf Club Verona: "Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene," (Romeo and Juliet, Act 1, Prologue). Although well acquainted with the beauty of "fair Verona", England's Bard could not have foretold the creation of a beautiful golf course just 10 kilometres outside the city.
In its tranquil, rural countryside setting, Verona Golf Club is home to a wonderful, mainly tree-lined, parkland course. The opening nine, laid out in 1963 by John Harris, are an enjoyable loop of holes that make good use of the undulating terrain, while placing a premium on accuracy from the tee. Anything too wayward will potentially find an assortment of trees, bushes and thick vegetation from which escape (let alone finding your ball) may not be possible.
The back-nine, which came later in 1973, contains the more interesting holes and provides the best views onto the delightful and unspoilt Veneto countryside. The picture-postcard clubhouse, a beautifully proportioned and ivy-clad villa, simply adds to the undoubted charms of "fair Verona Golf Club."
Like the star-crossed lovers in Romeo and Juliet, Verona Golf Club has its own glittering jewels; the 10th and 17th are two of the most perfect golf holes in all of Italy. Sitting side by side, separated by a row of trees and flanked by vineyards on either side, this pair of par-5s, the 10th played downhill, the 17th uphill, serve to underline what beautiful golf course architecture in stunning rural scenery is all about.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. Closed Tuesdays.

Every year the city of Verona is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists who come to see its artistic beauties, attend its many annual fairs, shows and operas, and marvel at the ancient amphitheatre built by the Romans. Apparently the city was a favourite place for Julius Caesar to relax in.
Verona provides the setting for two of Shakespear's plays: the Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Romeo and Juliet. Juliet's balcony at the Villa Capuleti is one of the city's most visited attractions.
