Golf Club Paradiso del Garda

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 2004

Golf Club Paradiso del Garda: This relatively new Stay&Play addition to the golfing scene around Lake Garda, provides an ideal base from which to discover the area's excellent cluster of golf courses. Laid out over relatively open and constantly undulating terrain, the two testing nine-hole loops of the championship course (Paradiso del Garda) are complemented by a 4-hole Academy course (Golf Club Paradisetto).

Although quite a compact layout, Jim Fazio's excellent design ensures the holes do not crowd each other. Substantial earthmounding has produced many bumps and hollows, dips and ridges, while plentiful bunkering and several small lakes on the back-nine give a modern, resort feel to the course. Young, maturing trees are liberally dotted around, although its only at the par-5 6th that you'll feel "boxed-in" by trees when playing your tee shot.

Among many testing holes, there's a sharp dog-leg to be negotiated at the par-4 4th. The par-5 14th and short risk-reward par-4 17th are tightly wrapped around small lakes, while the intricate par-5 18th requires a hop-skip-and-jump to reach the safety of the putting surface.

With a fraction less than 6000 metres (6500 yards) to be played from the back tees, you will be better served by accuracy rather than big-hitting, especially if the latter is wayward.

There are some pleasant views from the layout's higher elevations, especially onto the towering pre-Alps in the distance. You should expect a bit of traffic noise on one or two holes that are played closest to the A4 Autostrada, but nothing too disturbing.
