20 km SE of Venice (by ferry to Lido di Venezia)
BY CAR : From the Port of Venice, you will need to take a 40-minute ferry ride out to the Venice Lido (one of the great short ferry journeys of the world). On Venice Lido follow direction Malamocco and then Alberoni. Follow the road for approx 10 km to the end of the Lido, and then follow signs for Venezia Golf Club. ON FOOT : take a water-bus (vaporetti) or water-taxi out to Venice Lido. Then a taxi or the regular bus service down the Lido to Alberoni.
Circolo Golf Venezia / Venice Golf Club: Occupying over 100 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon, it is difficult enough to comprehend the scale and grandeur of Venice. Quite another thing to imagine golfing between its sumptuous palaces and labyrinth of canals. But cross over by boat to the Venice Lido, and you'll discover, at the island's southern tip, the tranquil, tree-lined pleasures of Venice Golf Club.
Setting out from its enchanting 1820s clubhouse, and teeing off from 17th century ramparts, this classical parkland layout has challenged and delighted golfers for many decades. Sometimes described as a "links layout", owing to its gently undulating sandy base and occasional open stretches flanked by wispy grass, nowadays the look and feel is more that of a parkland course.
Always full of character, tight avenues of mature trees line many fairways, requiring accuracy from the tee and presenting the opportunity to "shape" your shots around several gently dog-legging holes. The only "canal" to be crossed is a small inlet that sits below the first tee. Thereafter water hazards are limited to one or two elegant ponds that skirt the 8th, 11th and 13th holes.
Around the clubhouse an ancient fortress, surrounded by a moat and steep banks, now provides nicely elevated teeing positions for the 1st, 10th and 16th holes (no longer gun emplacements looking onto the Adriatic). Your tee shot at the blind par-3 9th must cross the moat and scale a bank to find the safety of the "hidden" green.
Although tantalisingly close throughout, you'll only catch a brief glimpse of the sea at the par-4 14th. However, the ferry ride out here more than compensates in terms of sea views.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. Closed Mondays.
Must book in advance. Maximum handicap: 36.
Players generally walk this course. Golf carts available for hire.

Venezia Golf Club is located on the Venice Lido, a 20 km long sandbar, which is home to about 20,000 residents. In the summer large numbers of tourists arrive to enjoy the Lido's expansive beaches, and many other attractions, including the Venice Film Festival. The island is home to three settlements: the Lido itself in the north, Malamocco in the centre, and Alberoni at the southern end, where the golf course is located.
With history oozing out of every nook and cranny of Venice it is perhaps no surprise to find the golf clubhouse was built in 1826, constructed inside an old Austro-Hungarian fortification, which itself dates back to the mid-1600s.
Venezia Golf Club hosted the Italian Open Championship in 1955, 1960 and 1974. More recently the club has been the host venue for the Italian Seniors Open (see our Tournaments section > by Venue > Venezia).
