Headfort Golf Club is home to two enjoyable parkland courses, the newer and more expansive New course, designed by Irish golfing legend Christy O'Connor Jr in 2000, and the original Old Course, which dates from 1930.
The championship New course at Headfort takes you out-and-back in two roaming nine-hole loops. En route, full use is made of some wider stretches of the Blackwater River. Your ball will need to carry across the river on four seperate occasions, at the par-4 9th and 10th holes, the long par-3 17th and again at the excellent par-4 18th. When water is not in play, plenty of stylish bunkering threatens.
The par 3s are predominantly played in woodland settings, while other parts of the course are a mix of tree-lined fairways and more open stretches. At the left-to-right doglegging par-5 16th, you sweep past mansionesque Headfort School.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.

The idea of creating a new golf club near Kells, to the northwest of Dublin, was first agreed in 1929 and the course came into play the following year with nine holes laid out in a section of beautiful parkland leased from the Headfort Estate. The mansion house at Headfort, dates from the 1760s, and is now home to the fee-paying Headfort School.
