Vidauban Golf Club (formerly known as Prince de Province) is home to one of the top-rated and finest championship golf courses in France. It is also one of the country's most exclusive and private clubs, with a membership that is thought to number less than 100 well-heeled golfers.
Robert Trent Jones Sr envisioned the course while strolling through the brush along the nearby L'Argent River. He bought the land from a farmer, and later designed the layout and built the course in collaboration with his son Robert Trent Jones Jr. They created what is widely regarded as one of Jones Sr's later masterpieces.
The excellent tree-lined and open parkland layout winds its way through a wonderfully natural and wild landscape of rocky outcrops, umbrella pines, almond trees and vineyards. The course contains a wealth of wonderfully crafted, memorable and challenging holes. Definitely a course to challenge your all-round game, if you ever get the rare opportunity to play it.
Limited access: this is a private course generally playable only by members and their invited guests.
Private club; guests may only play if hosted by a member.
Players generally walk this course.
Originally known as Prince de Provence, the course is laid out in the Domaines de Viduaban, which was bought by Robert Trent Jones Sr in the 1970s. The land sits in the middle of the Plain des Maures (Plain of the Moors), a large national nature reserve in southern France's Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
It was not until the late 1980s that Jones, together with his son Robert Trent Jones Jr, laid out and then built the golf course. Never fulfilling Jones Sr's vision for the layout to host top-level tournaments, the course became the private preserve of its small and exclusive membership. Once built, "Le Prince" was acclaimed as one of the greatest collaborative designs of Messrs Jones (Sr and Jr).
Continental Europe's 17th best course (Golf World, 2023).

(May 30-June 2).
