Golf Pléneuf-Val-André: This much admired seaside golf course on the north coast of Brittany is laid out above the town of Val-André, on what was previously farmland and coastal scrubland. Although a clifftop course, rather than one played through towering sand dunes, the layout still has much of the character of a links style course. It also offers fabulous sea views from several holes.
Pléneuf-Val André's layout is fair but challenging, with solidly crafted and gently undulating holes lined by long wispy fescues, bushes and a scattering of small trees. Stylish bunkering and mounding also features, particularly around the good-sized greens.
Oddly, on one or two holes, a few of the bushes were neatly trimmed into round shapes; something a bit unexpected on this otherwise very natural and un-manicured layout. Although upkeep may not always be 5-star, a touch of ruggedness is not at all out of place on a seaside layout of this quality.
In all respects this is a wonderfully authentic seaside golf course, that ranks with the best in France. In addition to many fabulous vistas onto the English Channel ("La Manche" in French) and across picturesque countryside, there are also some wonderful views down to the town of Val-André, with its large steepled church.
Pick of the holes: among many excellent holes, the par-4 10th combines a terrific sea view with a terrifyingly tight drive. The par-5 11th, especially from the most elevated back-tees, is another unforgettably scenic golf hole, one to savour and capture on camera. But be careful at this hole, a hooked drive will land you on the beach.
