Omaha Beach (La Mer)
Golf Omaha Beach (La Mer course): Spread out over a wide area to the west of Port-en-Bessin, Omaha Beach offers 36-holes of championship golf on its La Mer and Le Manoir courses. Onsite accommodation and excellent practice facilities reinforce this as an ideal Stay & Play location from which to explore the Normandie coast and its historic D-Day beaches.
Although La Mer's back-nine loop heads inland, providing picturesque views across the Bessin valley, the front-nine inevitably steals the show. After a varied opening sequence of undulating, well-bunkered and predominantly parkland style holes, the more linksy par-4 6th brings you to the cliff's edge. From this elevated vantage point, you look down onto Omaha Beach itself, with the town's impressive harbour entrance on your right. Alongside the 6th green, accompanied by fabulous coastal and sea views, a small memorial reminds us of the tumultuous events that took place here on June 6, 1944.
La Mer's roaming layout takes you through fields and farms, and occasionally alongside roads and residences. In keeping with Normandie's reputation for cider making, several of the flatter, back-nine holes are flanked by apple trees.
The best and most scenic of the back-nine holes come at the short, doglegging par-4 14th, and excellently crafted par-3 15th. With each hole at Omaha Beach dedicated to a major D-Day leader (the opening five holes are named after Eisenhower, Churchill, De Gaulle, Koeing and Montgomery respectively) the reminders of what happened here in June 1944 are never far away.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.

Excellent
From June 6, 1944, the stretch of beach just east of Port-en-Bessin, between Ste-Honorine-des-Pertes and Vierville-sur-Mer, would forever be known as Omaha Beach. This was the code name for what turned out to be one of the best defended and most difficult landing points for the Allied invasion of German-occupied France.
On this 5 mile (8 km) long beach, the untested U.S. 29th Infantry, eight companies of U.S. Army Rangers and the battle-hardened 1st Infantry Division ran into the German 352nd Infantry's considerable defences.
By the end of the "longest day" the U.S. troops had secured two small footholds above the beach, but lost 4,500 men in so doing. The American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, is a lasting and moving memorial to this chapter of WW2.
