26 miles SW of central London
On the south-west side of London, leave the M25 motorway at exit 10 (Guildford) and follow the A3 direction Guildford. After approx 1.5 miles take the first exit from the A3 (marked Ockham-Ripley-Send). At roundabout take the last exit marked Wisley RHS Gardens - London (A3). Immediately after roundabout, but before joining A3, turn sharp left into Mill Lane. Follow signs to golf club.
The Wisley: this prestigious and private golf club, with 27 top-quality holes of golf laid out by Robert Trent Jones Jr (and his lead designer Kyle Phillips), comprises three excellent nine-hole loops. Set in a quiet natural environment, all three nines (Church, Mill and Garden), are predominantly open parkland, with plenty of rolling mounds, copious bunkers and water aplenty in play. All present a testing championship challenge.
With the charming River Wey running through the southern end of the Mill-nine, and the River Wey Navigation (canal) flanking the property's west side (on the Church and Mill-nines), it's no wonder threatening ponds and ditches are in play on several holes.
In addition to the water, plenty of grassy rough and occasional heathland-style gorse bushes will encourage you to keep your ball as close as possible to the good-width, gently rolling fairways. An abundance of large and stylish bunkering adds considerably to the challenges presented at each hole, while handsomely contributing to the easy-on-the-eye aesthetics of this renowned private course.
The Garden-nine, a favourite with many members, exudes all the charm of the other two nines, not least after its recent renovation. Several holes are flanked by small lakes and streams, while many of its green surrounds are characterised by beautifully sweeping run-off areas, as well as those ever-threatening stylish bunkers.
Pick of the holes: the par-5 6th (Mill) requires you cross the River Wey from the tee and on your approach; an attractive white span bridge gets you across to yet another large subtly sloping green. The hole is book-ended by two memorable and contrasting par-3s at 5 and 7. A special mention also for the par-4 9th on Church. As you look towards the green (and Wisley "spire" beyond), a raft of Scots pine gives a heathland feel to the hole's leftside. In contrast, a large pond adorns the hole's rightside, creating a garden-like parkland aura ... the green, a mere 50+ yards deep, is given an Augusta-like backdrop courtesy of the rhododendrons.
Limited access: this is a private gated golf course, generally playable only by members and their invited guests.
Private club; guests may only play if hosted by a member.
Soft spikes encouraged. Players generally walk this course. Caddies available if requested in advance.
Excellent
Running alongside The Wisley Golf Club is the River Wey and River Wey Navigation (canal). Over 350 years ago, in 1653, the River Wey became the first British river to be successfully canalised for commercial traffic, the canal running from Town Bridge in the centre of Guildford up to the River Thames at Weybridge.
Combined with the younger Godalming Navigation, which extended further southward from Guildford, the River Wey Navigation, brought prosperity not only to the towns of Guildford and Godalming, but also this whole region of west Surrey and north Hampshire.
The Wisley's Church-nine takes its name from the nearby historical Wisley village church, which was built in 1150. The Garden-nine gets its name from the Royal Horticultural Society Garden that lies just to the south of the golf course across the River Wey. The Mill-nine is named after the Grade-II-listed Ockham Mill.
